Bayer acquires Monsanto with its seed brands, De Ruiter and Seminis, stating a commitment to developing smarter ways to grow more healthy crops that are more environmentally and economically sustainable. Seminis segments its products to better deliver crop-specific expertise by focusing solely on open-field and unheated protected products. The new Seminis brand promises growers outstanding growing potential and freedom – the freedom to grow the very best crops, the freedom to grow their business and the freedom to build their future.
Monsanto acquires Peotec as part of ISG, and De Ruiter Seeds, specialized in protected cultures. Seminis continues to focus on open field crops.
Monsanto acquires Western Seed and Poloni Semences and creates International Seed Group, Inc. (ISG), an investment holding company that provides specialised, regional vegetable and fruit seed companies with access to capital and technology.
Seminis becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of Monsanto Company.
In China, Seminis opens an operations center and its third research facility.
In India, Seminis adds four research stations, opens an operations centre and significantly expands commercial activities. Seminis launches innovative products such as Bambino®, a personal watermelon and Lettuce Jammers®, a new type of lettuce for wraps.
Seminis completes the integration of its legacy systems.
Seminis introduces the Seminis Vegetable Seeds brand.
Seminis purchases Korean firms Hungnong Seed Company and Choong Ang Seed Company to enhance product lines in Asia. Seminis purchases Horticeres, the vegetable division of Sementes Agreceres SA, strengthening its presence in South America and product lines for tropical climates.
Seminis acquires Petoseed Company and Royal Sluis.
Seminis is founded through the acquisition of Asgrow Seed Company, as well as the Bruinsma and Genecorp brands, specializing in greenhouse and lettuce, respectively.
The first Brazilian plant breeding company, Horticeres, is founded.
Petoseed is founded in California. Petoseed led the hybridization of hot peppers and tomatoes in the 1970s and 80s; the company built a strong presence in Mexico and the U.S. with disease-resistant seed varieties.
Bruinsma (est 1934), a specialist in greenhouse and protected culture, introduces the first commercial tomato hybrid in Europe. Korean seed company, Choong Ang, is established.
In Korea, Hungnong Seed Company is established. Hungnong is the leading provider of radish and hot pepper seeds, as well as many Asian vegetables.
The global seed industry begins. Royal Sluis becomes the first European vegetable seed company to grow seed crops in both Europe and the Americas. The company also opens its first branch office in the U.S.
Royal Sluis is established in Holland and later becomes a leading European vegetable seed company.
Seminis’ oldest brand, Asgrow Vegetable Seeds, is established.
